Jackson James-Wood moved into the Wellington BizDojo in March last year as Pledge Me’s “Chief Media Wrangler”. Jackson saw our coworking community grow from roughly 48 to 140 residents and the physical space double in size. Caitlin caught up with him in his last week in the Welly Dojo before he hit the road to BizDojo Auckland, where he's now working as Airbnb's new “Community Operations Guy”.
In your year at BizDojo you’ve seen quite a few changes to the place. What’s your overall impression of being here?
The cool thing about the BizDojo when we first moved in was that it was a close knit community. Even though it’s grown a lot in terms of space and people, the community hasn’t broken, it’s just spread out.
What did you like about being in a coworking space?
I loved the collaborative aspect of this space and being able to bump into people and get ideas firing. That’s an opportunity you don’t get anywhere else. The space itself is beautiful and there’s plenty of room for everyone as it’s been broken up logically.
Do you have any recommendations for someone looking at coming into the Dojo?
You need to be somewhat social, you can’t really be a hermit. Also take the opportunity to network and get amongst things like the daily quiz, or programmes that are put on by BizDojo. Also, clean up your f**king dishes. Even if I don’t work here I will come and poke you in the ribs.
Jackson you’ve also been quite well known to take daily naps in our S Zone… how are you going to get by without them?
Luckily I can generally sleep anywhere, but I will choose my future workspace based on its ability for me to be able to take naps.
Seriously, micronaps are super important! Wearing one of my other hats I’ve done a lot of work on workplace fatigue and stress. Between 2pm and 3pm is when your brain is starting to fade in the day, so you might as well make the most of that time and take a 15-20 minute snooze to wake up feeling a whole lot better and more productive for the next two or three hours.
So apart from our S Zone and it’s nap-ability, anything else you’ll miss about being here?
I will miss being in this space all the time, it truly is a beautiful place to work. The people are amazing and I feel like I’ve been part of a bigger community. Since it’s expanded I don’t know everyone’s names, but people are so friendly and will say “Hi” in the street and stuff, that’s really nice.
We’re gonna miss you Jackson, you’ve been a big personality in the space and a great part of our community!
And while we know Jackson was sad leaving us in Wellington too...
... it didn't take long for him to make himself at home in Auckland!
